X2O: The most flavorful eliquid experience

For over fifteen years, I was a cigarette consumer.  Not a heavy consumer, as my smoking was mostly contained to work, driving, and social activities, but a smoker nonetheless.  Several months ago after having several friends make the switch to ecigarettes, I thought it was time I tried.  So far, my cigarette consumption has dwindled to nothing, and even my vaping habit is dwindling.

My initial purchase was at a south Austin shop, and I was quite blown away by their vast selection and array of light saber looking devices.  Of course, I don't feel I need something so expensive, so I settled on a basic eGo setup.  Nothing fancy, as in my setup does not contain any bells and whistles:  no adjustable wattages or huge batteries.  Nothing.

I've been satisfied with the quality of the actual vape pen, but their flavors, although numerous, seem to be lacking one thing...flavor.  Sure, their flavor wheel and everything is great and the employees pay great attention to the customer's needs, but if the liquid isn't flavorful why not just buy a gallon of unscented eliquid and call it a day?

Thankfully, I have found a suitable replacement product in a great line of eliquids by X2O.  Initially I received two flavors:  Barefoot Beach and Fruity Tyrant.

The first I tried was Barefoot Beach, which is a very nice mint lemonade flavor with plenty of bite.  At first, it seemed there was too much flavor, which I deem a testament to the quality of the product.  My first good vape was filled with an overwhelming mint/menthol flavor, which I thought was too intense for long-term use.  However, the lemonade flavor was quickly apparent upon subsequent pulls and evens out its profile.

I stuck with that liquid for a few days then moved onto the Fruit Tyrant scent.  By far, this is the greatest flavor I have tried during my experience with ecigs.  My initial taste was an overwhelming pineapple, but much like Barefoot Beach, it quickly settles into a very fruity flavor which I find reminiscent of Juicy Fruit gum.  Seriously, this flavor is a serious home run and is blended perfectly.

Also, just the packaging of these items beat any of the self-labeled liquids I've purchased at other locations.  These are expertly labeled and boxed.  Also included on every box is a list of ingredients.  Something that seems to be a step up from the verbal response of "it's a 50/50 mix" I got from an employee at one of Austin's vape shops.

These two samples have left me with a bigger craving, and that is to try out other liquids from this company.  Fruit Tyrant will be a permanent addition to the rotation, and I can't help but feel there are a few more gems to try from this company.

Dan's WrestleMania XXX preview and predictions

The 30th installment of WWE's flagship pay-per-view, Wrestlemania, will take place just a few days away on Sunday, April 6 from New Orleans.  Much like I did with SummerSlam last year, I'd like to run down the card with relevant information and my own predictions.

Winner of Daniel Bryan/HHH vs. Randy Orton vs. Batista

It doesn't take much to see exactly how this one is going to play out.  Daniel Bryan has bided his time and put forth the effort.  Although that doesn't always guarantee success in the wrestling world, it is a pretty solid lock that he's going to win the title (again) on professional wrestling's biggest stage.

However, he still has his work cut out for him.  It is going to be difficult carrying HHH through a match and then needing to do the exact same thing in a second match against two others.

Personally, I'm sure he's up to the challenge.  Bryan has dominated Ring of Honor.  He's an indy king.  He's also a veteran of Japan, where wrestling is truly wrestling.  What else is there?

Bautista is less than a part timer, and honestly I don't see his appeal.  What would HHH or Orton gain from a title win?  Absolutely nothing.  Would Bryan not winning hurt WWE's appeal with fans at this point?  Absolutely

Winner and new WWE champion:  Daniel Bryan

John Cena vs. Bray Wyatt

Anyone who has watched wrestling for any amount of time knows that Cena is going to walk away with the win here.  The funny thing is that in pro wrestling, the winner isn't always the one who comes out on top.

Wyatt is, in my opinion, one of the brightest bits of potential there is as far as the WWE goes.  He has come a long way and is now turning out consistently good promos and gets tremendous heat from fans.  He's had a number of high profile feuds over the past year, and that has now extended to the top babyface.

Cena not being in the main event and not being in contention for any title is just a smart move by the WWE.  Admittedly, I've missed most of his career as I've only started watching wrestling again over the past few years.  However, with the experiences I've had, it is easy to see Cena has the Hogan syndrome.  He's a top draw, children love him, and he sells merchandise.  He must have a prominent position, and usually does.  However, at some point his star will start to wane, and that time is beginning now.  He can still be prominent, but after so many years it is time for the WWE to start cultivating new stars.

Winner:  John Cena, but hopefully this match throws Bray Wyatt into superstardom.

The Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar

In what I consider "The Battle of the Part-Timers", the Undertaker will return for what has become his only annual match.  He's put his time in and his career speaks for itself.  This year will be no different, despite the competition.  When someone has over 20 straight career wins at WrestleMania, and has been as loyal to the WWE as The Undertaker has, you can't see this year being a loss at all.

Winner:  Undertaker

Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal

Thirty mid-card talents are slated to take to the ring for this one.  So far, 27 of the participants have been announced with no names striking me as particularly special.

Honestly, a battle royal should be held sparingly, and the WWE is quite fresh off of the Royal Rumble, which is one of their biggest pay-per-views of the year.  Unless something special is planned like the return of CM Punk or something on that level, this is simply there to fill air time.

Winner:  Ziggler, hopefully.

Overall, the card for Wrestlemania XXX looks quite weak.  Hopefully there will be a few big surprises, as the main card looks to be quite predictable and stale.

I'm absolutely loving the WWE Network and recommend it to anyone with even a passing interest.  Today, I noticed the WWE released its network specific programming in regards to Wrestlemania this sunday and thought it deserved a share.

After a few crazy weeks and an impromptu trip to Louisiana, it appears I'm back for the time being.  I'll have some posts up when possible.

Dungeons and Dragons Day 3: What was the first dungeon you explored as a character?

I have fond memories of the first dungeon that was explored as a character.  It seems as though it was yesterday.  Wait, it was just a month ago, so there shouldn't be much memory loss regarding the character.

However, I can't share too many details because is from a Pathfinder Society scenario named "The Confirmation," which was recommended to me as a perfect starting point within the world of organized play.

The dungeon itself wasn't very large, but we did meet several types of enemies.

Eventually we solved the problems given to us and defeated the enemies to make it back outside and finish out the scenario.  

It is quite unfortunate that I can't tell more about what happened, but it is quite easy to find out for yourself as this scenario is being run almost constantly, at least among the places I frequent.

Dungeons & Dragons Day 2: The first person you introduced to D&D

Well, this is going to be a short entry, as I have not actually introduced anyone to the game as of yet.

Over the course of two nights I did show my girlfriend the basics of the game, and designed a characters.  However, she does not have an active interest in playing.

However, the next time I return to my hometown, I do expect to run a few games to show friends there the game.  As they are all avid Magic: the Gathering players, I believe they're ready for that next step.

Dungeons & Dragons Day 1: Who introduced you to the game?

Truthfully, I have not played a game of actual Dungeons & Dragons.  However, I am currently learning to play Pathfinder, which is an expanded/perfected version of D&D 3.5.

It has been a long process to find the game.  Although tabletop games garnered some interest during my teen years, there were never any actual games to be played in rural Louisiana during the 1990s.  Alas, my gaming up until recently was relegated to the realm of video games and an occasional begged game of Magic: The Gathering.

Also, those types of games during that period of my life had little interest.  Music was my biggest occupier of time.  Nonetheless,  I had a box set featuring the world of Robert E. Howard's Conan, which was liberated from an older brother's garage sale entries.  It seemed interesting, but other than myself there was no interest.  Eventually, I acquired source books for Marvel Super Heroes, Shadowrun, and Vampire: The Masquerade.

Fifteenish years later, life was different.  My location is now Austin, Texas, a wonderful city bustling with activity.  There were a number of factors, mostly involving this city, that led to my foray into gaming.

Firstly, there is a wonderful library system.  One day, while browsing the shelves I came across a few sourcebooks and checked them out.  They were all consumed with fierce voracity.

There is also one friend who has experience running campaigns, and told me about Pathfinder and it being a modified/improved version of D&D 3.5, his personal favorite versions.

My new place of residence has a number of fantastic comic book and gaming stores.  Upon my initial visits to Dragon's Lair I noticed quite a few advertisements for the Pathfinder Society and on January 4, 2014, I took the plunge with a scenario named "The Confirmation."

I was immediately hooked.  As stated in other entries, ChupacabraCon just solidified that fact.  It may have taken a long time, but I'm glad the aforementioned plunge was taken.

February: A month long celebration of D&D's 40th year

It's official.  I am going to try out the Dungeons and Dragons 40th Anniversary blog hop during the entire month of February, and detail a number of my feelings and thoughts despite my being new to the games.  Not every day can have a solid entry, but it will have an entry nonetheless.

I'm so looking forward to this.

Sting reportedly close to WWE deal

One of the rumors that pops up occasionally in the pro wrestling world is that of the ever-popular Sting headed to the WWE.

The story is always a big deal, because Sting is quite simply the biggest pro wrestling name to have never appeared on the "big stage" of the world's largest federation.

Speculation has come in the form of comments by Matt Hardy and Ring of Honor's Rob Feinstein.  Of course, a more reputable opinion comes in the form of Dave Meltzer, who also states the wrestler is close to a deal.

Inking this deal is good for both the wrestler and WWE.  First, as mentioned above, Sting is the wrestler who never hit the big time.  Although he is at least a decade past his prime, this will allow several big time, money generating matches against other legends such as The Undertaker or HHH.  Also, Sting is easily a Hall of Fame quality wrestler, especially with his years at WCW being those when they were most competitive with the WWE.

Please note that this is a common rumor, and one that has never materialized before.

Celebrating Dungeons and Dragons 40th year with a blog hop

So, today I was reading over at The RPG Corner and saw this list and the 28 day blogging challenge.

As one of my recent entries noted, I am quite new to actually playing tabletop RPG games.  However, the journalistic side of me is quite interested in reading the blog entries.

The originator of the blog hop at d20 Dark Ages is also offering tips on how to make it more successful.

Entries/commitments are due by Feb. 7, maybe by then I will jump on board as well.

Can we have the other Middle Earth back?

I tried.  Honestly.  I tried to give Peter Jackson's new Hobbit movies a fair shake.  As my previous review shown, I said nice things about the first movie despite them not necessarily needing to be said.

After spending an addition three hours watching the second entry into the Lord of the Rings "prequels", I'm not in as kind of a mood.  This film is entirely too long, and feels like it is being intentionally stretched to fill three films.

Other items just didn't belong, such as the numerous scenes with Legolas.  In the first movie, a brief shot of Frodo served to bridge the two trilogies.  I understand that.  To write in Legolas to the extent he is in "Smaug" just doesn't make sense.  It is like Jackson is throwing out all of his directorial sensibilities and has become nothing but a purveyor of fan fiction.

The effects are also nowhere close to the level of those in Lord of the Rings.  During the middle of the movie, we are "treated" to the dwarves escaping Elves by floating in barrels down a fast moving river.  The effects are truly horrible.  At times I couldn't tell if I was watching a real movie or one of the throwaway garbage titles that are featured extensively on the SyFy Channel.

The little bit of redemption in this one is near the end.  It is the character of Smaug, which is obviously where all of the special effects budget for this one went.  His interaction with Bilbo and the eventual action scene tied to it was the true highlight of the movie, but comes way past the point that you actually care about the characters.

Please, at this point I can't recommend anything but skipping these series entirely, much like I recommend with the Star Wars prequels.

ChupacabraCon: Solidifying my status as a gamer for life

I'd say that if one thing has been established during the few years of blogging, it is that I have a number of varied interests.  Of course, I love house music.  Film consumes me.  Books and writing is the essence of my being.  Heck, there are even entries here regarding boxing and professional wrestling.

Well, a few months ago I was bitten by an entirely different type of bug:  that of tabletop roleplaying games.

I'm not entirely sure what sparked the interest.  One of the contributing factors was definitely the Nerd Poker podcast, which I happened upon somewhat haphazardly while searching through iTunes one day.

During my daily commute one day, an episode was on deck.  Brian Posehn and friends were hilarious, and immediately gained my interest.  This wasn't exactly what I expected of a role playing game.  The story was hilarious and not quite what these types of games had been talked up as.  Also, other people I respect have quite the love of these games.

A friend, who has experience as a game master and D&D veteran, mentioned Pathfinder as a good starting point for my entry into the world of tabletops due to it being a "perfected" version of 3.5.  His advice, coupled with my research our various local Pathfinder Society meetings, was a perfect fit.

Sourcebook and dice were ordered and I went about "learning" to the play the game.  No amount of preparation readied me enough for my first gaming experience at Ultimate Pathfinder Day at Dragon's Lair.  Thankfully, these gamers are a much friendlier lot than their console-based gaming counterparts, and no problems were encountered.

While there, I noticed an advertisement for an upcoming gaming convention here in Austin, carrying the name ChupacabraCon.  Now, I've always wanted to go to a ComicCon, but never got the chance.  I know comics.  They're safe.  It's familiar ground.  This was something entirely different.

Despite my mind's best effort at keeping me away from the convention, I went.  It would have been a huge mistake if I hadn't.

Again, these gamers were quite inviting and willing to share knowledge regarding the gaming system and any other bit of information you're interested in.

At the end of the weekend, I played two Pathfinder Society sessions, and even took part in the "big event" they had planned for Saturday night, which was a special session of the aforementioned game that took place with multiple tables that encompassed battles across an entire city that fit together into one story.  Sure, that was amazing, but only concerns one game.

There was so much variety.  Deadlands tugs at the part of me that loves both the western and horror movie genres.  Shadowrun is the tabletop equivalent to one of my favorite Super Nintendo games.  Numenera is...well I'm not sure but it looked awesome.  Some other guys were playing this feudal Japan looking game that looked great as well.  I believe it was Legend of the Five Rings.

There were also panels.  I sat in on one particularly interesting session featuring Ernest Cline, author of Ready Player One.  The panel spoke about a number of subjects about writing about or producing game based items, and I was enthralled.

In just a few months, this whole other world has opened up, and I am so glad that it did.

Star Trek Into Darkness breathes even more life into the franchise

As a child, there weren’t many weekends when I didn’t enjoy syndicated episodes of the original Star Trek series.  Both it and Star Wars were a way of life.  I was eight or so when The Next Generation premiered, and it furthered my love of Trek.  Although as I grew into adolescence I cared less and less about both science fiction and fantasy.  They just weren’t cool.  Then one thing happened that I thought put the nail in their coffin:  The Star Wars prequels.

Although I watched all three of them, they turned me off of sci-fi completely.  For years, there were no films or books in the genre I cared about.  George Lucas was akin to a Saddam Hussein or Adolph Hitler in my eyes.  He still is, truthfully, but there is now hope.  

The hope I speak of is J.J. Abrams.

An unexpected journey back to Middle Earth

Expectations weren’t very high when I popped The Hobbit:  An Unexpected journey into the DVD player last night.  After all, Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which is amazingly ten years old at this point, is easily the best fantasy movies ever made.  How can you ever top that?  To tell the truth, you can’t.

That becomes my biggest gripe with the first edition of The Hobbit.  The books were totally different works, as The Hobbit was made for a younger audience and reflects that, while The Lord of the Rings is quite serious and tells of a serious war for the future of Middle Earth.

The problem becomes that The Hobbit is a roughly 300 page book without the exquisite detail found in J.R.R. Tolkien’s other works.  Also, with the lighter tone there is only one option to extend it.  Basically, they’ve combined it with aspects of The Silmarillion, a dense work of Tolkien that reads more like medieval literature than a fantasy novel.

You can tell when they’re moving back and forth between the two very different works.  One second you are seeing something completely goofy and seemingly out of place, while the sequences from The Silmarillion lend a darker tone to the story.  Frankly, although the story is mostly derived from The Hobbit, the lighter toned scenes just seem quite out of place.  

More blame can be attributed to the short original work being stretched into three movies of three hours each.  Two movies would have been a stretch, but in a way it still works.  Jackson’s Middle Earth is a living breathing place, and I’m thankful to be a visitor yet again.

The story also crawls at the start, but once the fantastic action scenes and top rate cinematography take over, the pace quickens greatly.  I was left excited about the next edition, which thankfully debuts next month.

Quality:  7/10

Rewatchability:  8/10

Cena, Bryan to win at tonight's Hell in a Cell pay-per-view

My initial introduction to journalism was in the world of pro wrestling as a manager, referee, commentator, and booker/promoter for Texas’s Coastal States Wrestling Association and Louisiana’s Thunder Pro Wrestling.  Quickly, I’m going to offer my belief on how tonight’s Hell in a Cell pay-per-view will turn out.

Curtis Axel vs. Big E. Langston

This match may not be happening, as I read earlier today that Axel has a legit injury.  This is a great move for Axel, who has petered on WWE television during recent weeks.  My belief is that this match would have been a win for the hilarious Langston, it was going to be through a disqualification as the big man hasn’t made his true impact on the WWE yet.

Rhodes Bros. vs. The Shield vs. The Usos

As a fan, I’m not into tag team matches that much.  In promoting they’re good for the talent because less in-ring time leads to less chance of injury, which is why you see so many tag team main events on the weekly live shows.  Amazingly, the tag division is going quite well for the federation currently, and there is a lot of talent in the ring for this one.  At the end of the match, look for the Rhodes brothers to come out on top.

A.J. Lee vs. Brie Bella

Lee is, quite frankly, a promoter’s dream as far as female talent goes.  She’s talented in the ring, cute, has charisma/stage presence, and a following.  The Bella Twins, from what I see as a non-fan of the Divas division, have one of those, a following.  Tonight, simply having a following could very well be enough due to the recent success of the Bella tv show on the E! channel.  In the backstage politics of professional wrestling, each respective twin dates main event level WWE talent in Daniel Bryan and John Cena, which makes their winning a little more likely.  Personally I’d book Lee to win, but this could honestly go either way.

C.M. Punk vs. Ryback and Paul Heyman

To use the vernacular of the WWE, I’m a Heyman guy.  He is a wrestling genius and solely responsible for some of the greatest wrestling moments in the past 30 years.  C.M. Punk, along with Daniel Bryan, are the two greatest assets to the WWE right now.  Sadly, Punk is paired with the increasingly-boring Ryback in the cell with the hope of there being a quality match produced.  Due to the fact that Punk is in the cell, I have a little faith.  This match is going to end with Ryback incapacitated, and Punk finally getting his hands on Heyman.

John Cena vs. Alberto del Rio

For children, this will be the match of the night.  I’m not into Cena, but can fully understand why he is at the main event level.  A match like this is only set up for Cena’s return.  Thankfully, that return involves him winning the title from a more deserving del Rio, instead of being thrown into the mix of the World Title with Bryan and Orton, he gets to compete for the lesser title.

Daniel Bryan vs. Randy Orton

I’m looking forward to this one.  As I’ve stated before, Bryan is the current shining star of the WWE.  He has the crowd in his favor, extreme amounts of in-ring talent, and an entertaining, although rehashed, storyline.  This one should be the match of the night with Bryan winning the title yet again.  Just be sure to expect further shenanigans from the McMahon family afterward.  

The Geeky DJ's SummerSlam preview

Once again it's time for the WWE's second biggest pay-per-view of the year, SummerSlam.

Personally, I feel that this year's card is much stronger than WrestleMania, and the WWE actually had a few interesting story lines developed coming into this big event.

So, sit back and enjoy my ideas on how this one should play out.

U.S. Championship:  Dean Ambrose (c) vs. Rob Van Dam

It's no secret that I believe ECW was the greatest United States based wrestling organization ever.  Its combination of well-developed storyline and interesting booking style changed the industry.  There also isn't much dispute to the fact that Rob Van Dam contributed greatly to that success.  His nickname was "The Whole Fuckin' Show" and in most cases, that's exactly what he was.  However, his performance outside of the hallowed halls of that dirty bingo hall in Philadelphia hasn't been as impressive from what I've seen.  Of course, you should keep in mind I didn't see much of him post-ECW.  I fail to understand why the WWE have picked him up on this current run with no real plans to use him.  He has recently been meandering from match to match, with no feud or even hope of one in the pipeline.

Dean Ambrose and The Shield, on the other hand, have been going strong since their debut last year.  They have consistently had feuds with main eventers and upper mid-carders.  Their faces are staples on Raw.  

This is also a dark match, scheduled for an hour before the official air time for the PPV.  There is no way Van Dam gets the title here.  The Shield will reign supreme.

Prediction:  Dean Abrose retains The United States title.

Natalya vs. Brie Bella

For those not in the know, the WWE recently launched a television show centered around the Divas on cable television.  I haven't seen it and won't.  Although the women of the WWE have consistently become better workers over the past decade, I just don't care.  I understand they need to advertise their new product, so there is two divas matches on the card for Summerslam.

Brie is apparently one of the bigger stars on the show form what I can gather.  Natalya is simply filling space in the ring for this one.

Prediction:  Brie Bella

Mutoh meets with TNA

Throughout my life, I've been a big fan of Keiji Mutoh, or "The Great Muta" as many know him.

The innovative Japanese wrestler, who has worked for both New Japan and All Japan pro wrestling companies in Japan, as well as WCW in the United states, is a true legend that is currently heading up the Wrestle-1 promotion.

It thrilled me to see a picture of him meeting with Jeff Jarrett of TNA wrestling for an undisclosed reason on Rajah.  One can only hope that a talent sharing agreement was reached and that we will see some Japanese talent headed stateside.

Trailer released for SyFy's cosplay reality series

Yes, I'm critical of both SyFy and reality television, but the network has released a trailer for their upcoming series Heroes of Cosplay and it doesn't look horrible.

The premiere is August 13 and I'll definitely see it eventually as I'm horrible at actually remembering to watch weekly shows.  I do wonder how cosplayers feel about this show.

Living legends square off in wrestling ring

Japanese wrestling, or puroresu, is quite different than what you get in America.  I was browsing YouTube today when I came across this gem that puts the living Tiger Masks (I, III, and IV) vs. Ultimo Dragon, Jushin "Thunder" Liger, and The Great Sasuke.

Every person participating in this match is a living legend in the wrestling business, despite you having never heard their name.  Take a few moments and enjoy the difference.
